Bolt of Hope Grant Empowers Independence Through GRACE Foundation

The final non-profit that Bolt of Hope was graciously able to grant was Independence Through GRACE Foundation. This incredible organization provides programs and services for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, centering on each participant’s inherent God-given value and empowering them to live with independence. Through personalized programs that include enrichment activities, community service projects, and support for employment or entrepreneurship, ITG fosters meaningful integration into the local community.

    The Limitless Microenterprise Development Project

The grant awarded to Independence Through GRACE will help fund the Limitless Microenterprise Development Project, one of four core programs offered by ITG. This initiative provides resources and services to individuals interested in starting their own businesses, ensuring that entrepreneurship remains an accessible and viable employment option for individuals with diverse abilities.

Microenterprises offer an adaptable work environment where participants can set their own schedules, choose suitable activities, and receive ongoing support from the Limitless program staff. Many ITG participants own and operate small businesses, often focusing on creative endeavors such as personalized mugs, t-shirts, and tote bags. However, the high cost of specialized equipment and the potential impact on public benefits create significant barriers for these entrepreneurs.

To address these challenges, Independence Through GRACE is developing the Limitless Makerspace, a shared workspace equipped with high-quality technology and machinery that participants can use to start or expand their businesses.

Expected Impact & Long-Term Benefits of the Limitless Makerspace

    • Increased Business Viability – Participants will gain access to equipment that minimizes production costs and enhances efficiency.
    • Greater Financial Independence – Entrepreneurs can reinvest in their businesses, expanding operations and achieving a livable wage.
    • Faster Microenterprise Launch – New participants will be able to start businesses in a shorter timeframe, allowing for quicker community integration and self-sufficiency.
    • A More Inclusive Business Community – By fostering diverse local businesses, Bakersfield will see an enriched and inclusive marketplace that highlights the unique talents of every individual.

    A Vision for the Future

The ultimate goal is to see a thriving community of microenterprises owned and operated by individuals with diverse abilities, demonstrating the value and dignity of every person. Not only will this initiative benefit individual entrepreneurs, but it will also enrich the entire community by showcasing the power of inclusion and the immense contributions of all its members.

Through the support of Bolt of Hope, Independence Through GRACE is making meaningful strides toward breaking down barriers to business ownership, empowering individuals, and fostering a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

    Project Update:

On April 25, 2025, the Bolt of Hope Team had the privilege of visiting Independence Through Grace to see the incredible progress made from receiving their 2024 grant award. It was truly inspiring to witness the creativity and innovation happening inside the Maker’s Space. With advanced equipment including multi-color ceramic printers, advanced engraving machines, and a t-shirt press for high-quality apparel designs, entrepreneurs are now empowered to produce a wide range of marketable products with minimal assistance, supporting their entrepreneurial goals.

  • Magdalene Hope Establishes Bakersfield’s First Women’s Drop-In Center

Magdalene Hope Establishes Bakersfield’s First Women’s Drop-In Center

Magdalene Hope is among the five organizations that Bolt of Hope was honored to provide a grant to in late 2024.

Magdalene Hope’s vision is and has always been to bring the hope and unconditional love of Jesus Christ through a personal relationship to individuals working in the commercial sex industry.

Bakersfield, particularly the east side of town, faces challenges with sex trafficking, leaving many women in urgent need of essentials like food, water, clothing, and a safe space where they can rest without the threat of exploitation.

With the grant provided by the Bolthouse Properties, Bolt of Hope team, Magdalene Hope was able to create a women’s drop-in center, a first of its kind in Bakersfield. With the vision of providing a safe place for women in our city as well as Bakersfield’s “red-light district” to rest, charge their phone, eat a meal, shop at our clothing closet, receive prayer, counseling, therapy, and know that they have a way out of their current lifestyle, if this is something that they desire. All services provided by the drop-in center are for free to women and their children.

Magdalene Hope’s expected benefits of the women’s center facility are:

    1. That all women would find freedom physically and spiritually in Christ Jesus.
    2. For women to be empowered and set free and for those women to bring other women to our center.
    3. To eradicate sex trafficking in Bakersfield.

The overall hope is that this new women’s center will be a model for other cities to duplicate what Magdalene Hope has done here to help impact their communities.

  • Bolt of Hope Grant Supports Bakersfield Museum of Art’s Classroom Renovation

Bolt of Hope Grant Supports Bakersfield Museum of Art’s Classroom Renovation

The Bakersfield Museum of Art has been a significant part of Kern County since 1956, inspiring and engaging diverse audiences by providing a broad spectrum of creative visual arts experiences through the exhibition and preservation of fine arts, educational programs, community outreach, and special events.

The museum’s commitment to fostering creativity is reflected in its impactful educational outreach, which currently serves 14,000 students in the Bakersfield City School District and over 3,000 students in other Kern County districts. Additionally, the museum provides valuable programming to local library programs.

Recognizing the growing demand for arts education, the Bakersfield Museum of Art identified a crucial need to improve its classroom spaces. For over 20 years, the museum’s two classrooms have been heavily utilized by students and staff without significant renovations. The existing separation between the two rooms has created challenges in space management and limited opportunities for collaborative learning.

The upcoming renovation, supported by the Bolt of Hope grant, will merge the two classrooms into a larger, multifunctional space featuring a sliding glass door. This innovative design will enable students to rotate between learning centers, improve teaching flexibility, and create an enhanced collaborative environment. The expanded space will also increase the museum’s capacity to accommodate more students and provide centralized storage for art supplies and tools, streamlining educational activities for both staff and participants.

With the support of the Bolt of Hope grant, the Bakersfield Museum of Art anticipates completing the classroom renovation by March 2025, ensuring an enriched learning experience for thousands of students across Kern County.

The partnership between Bolt of Hope and the Bakersfield Museum of Art highlights the power of community-driven initiatives in enhancing educational resources and nurturing the creative talents of future generations. This exciting project stands as a testament to the ongoing dedication of local organizations working together to empower students through the arts.

Bolt of Hope Grant Supports Shielding the Frontline’s Mission to Aid Kern County’s First Responders

At Bolthouse Properties, our Bolt of Hope Team remains committed to strengthening our community by supporting organizations that bring hope and healing to those in need. A local organization that recently received a Bolt of Hope grant is Shielding the Frontline, a non-profit dedicated to providing free, confidential mental health support for Kern County’s frontline emergency responders and their families. Since 2023, Shielding the Frontline clinicians have treated over 500 frontline emergency responders and delivered nearly 3,000 counseling sessions.

With the grant provided by Bolt of Hope, Shielding the Frontline successfully launched a monthly addiction support group facilitated and led by licensed clinicians. These monthly meetings offer a safe, peer-supported space where Kern County first responders receive free, confidential counseling services and access to licensed clinicians specializing in trauma, behavioral health, and family support.

Long-Term Goals for Kern County’s First Responders

By the end of 2025, Shielding the Frontline intends to meet the following goals in order to make a long-term impact to Kern County:

    1. Provide a safe space for frontline emergency responders to receive peer support in conjunction with clinician facilitation to help navigate through their addictions.
    2. First responders are to be exposed to a wider option of coping strategies alongside their peers, specifically to the unique challenges experienced by first responders.
    3. Provide a secure and healthy environment for the first responder to share common experiences and be heard by other like-minded peers.
    4. Attendance from members of multiple Kern County first responder agencies at each monthly meeting.
    5. At least 5-10 frontline emergency responders in attendance at each addiction support meeting (on average).

At Bolt of Hope, we are excited to witness the impact Shielding the Frontline will have on our first responders in Kern County. We deeply appreciate each and every one of them for their dedicated service.

  • Bolt of Hope Team Supports InterVarsity with Transformational Grant

Bolt of Hope Team Supports InterVarsity with Transformational Grant

This year was especially meaningful for Bolthouse Properties’ Bolt of Hope Team as they awarded grants to five exceptional organizations. Among the recipients was InterVarsity, which received a Bolt of Hope Grant to fund a three-month initiative aimed at fostering connection and hope among college students.

Founded in 1941, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship is an interdenominational, evangelical Christian campus ministry dedicated to supporting students and faculty on college and university campuses. For over 75 years, InterVarsity has maintained a strong presence at hundreds of campuses, proclaiming Jesus as Lord and Savior, engaging students in scripture-based discipleship, and embracing people from all backgrounds and cultures.

InterVarsity Bakersfield’s vision is to cultivate a movement and sense of family that unites students from diverse backgrounds, guiding them to discover the true nature of Jesus and spreading God’s love throughout campuses, cities, and families.

Paul Benthin, InterVarsity’s Area Director, oversees the ministry’s work at six campuses across Kern County, including California State University Bakersfield, Bakersfield College, San Joaquin Valley College, College of the Sequoias, Porterville College, and Taft College.

The three-month initiative supported by the Bolt of Hope Grant aimed to combat the growing epidemic of loneliness among college students. Key components of the project included distributing self-care gift bags to 500 students, hosting a one-day retreat, and organizing a fall conference designed to foster connections among students and reinforce messages of hope found in the gospel.

    Measurable Success

InterVarsity’s ambitious goal was to reach 1,000 college students in Bakersfield and connect them to transformative opportunities that inspire leadership and strengthen their faith. Thanks to the grant, InterVarsity achieved remarkable outcomes:

    • Leadership Development: 52 college leaders and 16 faculty members received training to bring hope to their campuses.
    • Outreach Efforts: Engaged 1,770 students through self-care outreach and prayer.
    • Social Media Growth: Gained 146 new social media followers.
    • Gift Distribution: Provided 500 students with Hope Gift Bags containing self-care essentials.
    • Event Participation: 60 new students attended the Self-Care Beach Getaway, 86 students attended weekly Bible study groups, 30 students attended the Fall Conference, and 10 students attended a leadership meeting.

“This outreach was more than a shot in the arm. It was a catalytic event the created a new normal for our ministry.” shared Paul Benthin.

    A Vision of Hope

InterVarsity’s mission aligns closely with the Bolt of Hope Team’s commitment to fostering spiritual growth and supporting the community through compassion and faith-based initiatives. By investing in this project, the Bolt of Hope Team has played a pivotal role in addressing students’ emotional and spiritual needs, equipping them to become world changers who bring the hope of the gospel to their generation.

Bolt of Hope Helps Fund New Art Room for Local Non-Profit

Recently, Bolthouse Properties’ Bolt of Hope team had the extraordinary privilege of gifting a grant to Global Family’s Daughter Project Girls’ Home (DPGH). True to Bolt of Hope tradition, the team had the joy of surprising Jennifer Jenson, the Founder of DPGH with balloons, a gift basket of art supplies, a giant check, and of course, open arms.

The Daughter Project provides rehabilitative care to young female victims of human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. Since opening in 2017, they have welcomed over 150 young girls through their program. Looking for a more rural, therapeutic location that is less accessible to undesired activities and individuals, the organization acquired a new facility in 2022. The Daughter Project has been able to lend a helping hand to children and women rescued from sex trafficking with donations such as food, clothing, counseling, housing, education, employment, and medical services. This specific grant from Bolt of Hope team will pay for the construction of a therapeutic art room in their new location. This room will provide a beautiful, inspiring space for the young girls to foster peace and creativity while allowing them to explore their future possibilities. The DPGH provides rehabilitative care to young female victims of human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. • Bolt of Hope Funds New Roof Project At The Blessing Corner

Bolt of Hope Funds New Roof Project At The Blessing Corner

Earlier this month, Bolthouse Properties’ Bolt of Hope team had the honor of surprising The Blessing Corner Ministries with a Bolt of Hope Grant.

Since 1996, The Blessing Corner has worked tirelessly to meet the needs of underserved members of the greater Bakersfield community. Throughout the year, The Blessing Corner hosts numerous outreach events, such as an annual Thanksgiving Dinner and Christmas Extravaganza. Additionally, they serve up to 1,750 food baskets and hot meals per week.

Over the years, the organization experienced significant damage to their roof and floors and were in desperate need of a new roof and floors ahead of the winter season. Equipped with funds to meet their needs, the Bolt of Hope team enthusiastically arrived with balloons and a big check in hand to meet with Pastor John and Athena “Bonnie” Turner.

The team was surprised to find roofing trucks already on-site when they arrived at The Blessing Corner. The team carried forward with the surprise, nearly bringing Pastor Bonnie to her knees. Pastor Bonnie shared that the local roofing contractor and owner of BSW Roofing & Solar, Ernie Martinez, recognized the urgency to protect the building from further damage and offered to start the work without knowing if he’d receive payment. Ernie began the project with nothing more than a deposit and a promise of faith. It was an incredibly moving moment to see such an act of faith fulfilled and, more than that, to be a small part of it.

  • 2019 Bolt of Hope to help fund Field of Dreams

2019 Bolt of Hope to help fund Field of Dreams

Vanguard Christian Center’s sports field, while desolate in appearance, has been a beacon of hope to many. Located at 1701 Niles Street, the field has served the surrounding youth with sports, movie nights, and, more importantly, mentorship. Dennie Watson, pastor of Vanguard Christian Church, oversees the field and its activities.

“The hope and healing that has occurred over the years, through today, make the field an oasis to an otherwise dark part of town,” shared Dennie.

Over the last several years, Vanguard Christian Center has made great strides in improving the condition and usefulness of the field – removing old foundations, adding lights, fencing, and even grass. Unfortunately, the grass proved difficult and costly to maintain and so the field eventually returned to dirt.

While its condition has not stopped Vanguard or the neighboring youth from using the field, Vanguard Christian Center has been seeking the opportunity to cover the field with artificial turf as the turf would allow for expanded programs and opportunities for surrounding youth.

Bolthouse Properties’ Bolt of Hope team learned of Vanguard Christian Center’s project in 2018 while evaluating projects for the Bolt of Hope Grant.

On Saturday, July 27 the Bolt of Hope team had the great honor of surprising Vanguard Christian Center with the 2019 Bolt of Hope Grant. The grant provides the funds necessary to complete the artificial turf as well as assist with:

    • Finish curbing and base-layer application for track and field
    • Upgrade and/or replace fencing and security measures

2019 is the second year the Bolthouse Properties’ team provided a Bolt of Hope Grant. The current grant is the fourth grant overall. In 2018, the team was privileged to present a grant to three local organizations: LiFT, One Door Recovery, and Garden Pathways.

  • Grant Helps LiFT Revitalize Outdoor Area

Grant Helps LiFT Revitalize Outdoor Area

From the early stages, the Bolt of Hope team felt compelled to help children within the Bakersfield Community. The team intentionally sought local organizations currently working to improve the lives and futures of children in and around Bakersfield.

On Thursday, November 29th LiFT was presented with a “Bolt of Hope”, a grant from Bolthouse Properties that will fund repairs necessary to create a usable outdoor space that can be shared by all of their ministries.

LiFT is a non-profit organization that has been serving the community of Oildale since 2008. LiFT, which stands for Living in Fellowship Together, has three main ministries: Homework Club, Tuesday Night Dinner, and Shower Ministry.

The Homework Club at LiFT provides mentoring and academic support in a loving Christ-centered environment. The year-round program allows volunteers to form and maintain meaningful relationships with the children while demonstrating Christ’s love. Program activities include academic help, Bible lessons, science experiments, crafts, games, field trips, and special reward trips.

Bolt of Hope Awards Grant to One Door Recovery

One Door Recovery is a new, emerging Bakersfield-based non-profit organization seeking to provide quality out-patient drug and alcohol treatment with medical detox to everyone who is ready and willing to receive help, regardless of their ability to pay. The program will use evidence based curriculum while creating a supportive recovery community.

Bolthouse Properties’ employees selected One Door Recovery to receive a “Bolt of Hope” grant to assist in the startup of their program. The money awarded to them will be used for the purchase of KIPU, an electronic medical records software program tailored for addiction treatment. The software will allow One Door to provide the best, most comprehensive treatment to all patients, as well as, bill insurance companies for insured clients.

One Door Recovery plans to open in early 2019. For additional information visit: http://www.OneDoorRecovery.org.
